HR Excellence in Research
KTH strives to be an attractive employer for researchers at all stages of their careers and has been certified with the EU's HR Excellence in Research certification since 2021.

The meaning of the certification
The HR Excellence in Research Reward means that KTH meets many of the EU's high requirements for a responsible and professional employer and is committed to continuous quality work.
Statutes and guidelines – EU regulations for researchers
The certification and quality work means that KTH works actively with the EU Commission's Charter for Researchers - EU Charter & Code - and the HR Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R), which aims to:
• Improve the conditions for free research
• Promote an open labor market for researchers
• Promote access to and exchange of knowledge
This means in concrete terms that KTH works with continuous development and improvement based on 20 principles within the charter's four pillars:
• Ethical principles and professional responsibility
• Recruitment
• Working conditions
• Doctoral education, competence and career development
As a researcher you can be assured that KTH continuously strives to develop in accordance with the principles established in the EU Charter & Code.
Mandatory HRS4R process
When an institution has received the "HR Excellence in Research" award, an implementation process is undertaken in which the principles of the charter are integrated into the operations in the long term. The implementation follows a mandatory process (HR strategy for researchers) developed by the EU Commission, which is intended to help the individual institution implement the charter. The process is divided into three main phases; the initiation phase, the implementation phase and the renewal phase.
The Award Renewal Phase
After the implementation phase, the European Commission carries out regular reviews to maintain and renew the HR Excellence in Research award. These reviews are carried out every three years, every other time with a desk review and every other time with a visit by the Commission.

GAP analysis
A GAP analysis is a tool used to identify the difference ("gap") between the current situation and a desired future situation. In connection with the GAP analyses, KTH has spent a lot of time compiling and drawing on existing laws, regulations and policy documents at university and national level. Based on this compilation, comparisons then have been made with how well KTH meets the pillars and principles of the EU Charter and what needs to be improved in order for us to achieve the goals in the action plan.
Action plan
The action plan is the tool to concretize how we will move from the identified gap to actual feasible steps to achieve our goals linked to the main pillars and principles of the Charter.
